First edition Hardbound Very Good, No Jacket Burgundy cloth hardcover with gilt frame and titles on the front board and spine, light rubbing to the spine head and tail, slight fading to spine; former owner's name on ffep; clean pages with gilt top edges; tight binding; The author is not Sir Winston S. Churchill, but a successful American novelist and magazine editor who was born in St. Louis in 1871. Laid in to this copy is an unaddressed letter dated July 14, 1901 from John F. Hume commenting on the authenticity of this Civil War historical novel and recalling his personal observation of some of the events mentioned. Hume was an antislavery politician who edited the Missouri Democrat from 1861 to 1868, and supported Lincoln in the 1864 election. Earlier in his career he had be a Know Knothing representative to the Ohio legislature. Price: 199.00 USD
