First printing of original brown cloth stamped boards with gilt spine titles, pieces missing from spine head and tail from page edge line, 3 tiny spots on boards and spine; clean pages; tight binding; former owners' names faintly visible on ffep; according to author's preface, all but one of the twelve essays had previously appeared in print (several in Dial). Parker (1810-1860) was a Transcendentalist and Unitarian reformer and abolitionist. His writings influenced Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr.; 360 pages plus 4 pages of ads.
